Breast milk cheese

Believe it or not. Apparently there is a farm in France that specialises in cheese made from human breast milk. Well I've certainly not heard of them & I'm going to ask around if anybody else has. But they have a website (it's all in French tho') & you can even order online.

Then I came across this post at Indirani (an Indonesian couple living in Singapore) wherein the wife Rani tried making cheese from her own left over breast milk & concluded that it can't be done because breast milk doesn't curdle due to the low protein content.

So I'm really curious as to the validity of this farm in France. Is it a hoax ? If it really exists, what I'd like to know is where they get such massive quantities of breast milk & how they select their candidates. I'm all for breastfeeding & the benefits of breast milk (I did breastfeed the Girl till she was 20 months) but I'm not sure I will eat cheese from breastmilk. Would you ?

hey siu mei...this is rather interesting. i agree with you. where would they get enough to make all this cheese? maybe it's a hybrid of breast and cow milk...

funny how they put the 'bio' label on the website...does it mean the mothers who give milk are organic?? do they eat organic food? free range or battery? hehe..

Meng

I don't think so

Syliva

I kind of like how your name is spelt this way - Syliva Diva. Thanks. The photos are my very amateur efforts.

I have a friend with last name Moo so I thought it was her at first & about to ask who's that girl in the picture. I didn't notice that bio label on the website. So what do you think ? Real or not ?

So, I'll admit, I've never tasted breast milk. But it reminds me of that Friends episode in which Ross is getting ready to give his son a bottle, and they're talking about how it tastes: "like cantaloupe juice."

Cantaloupe cheese? Ugh.

(found my way here from Ello's blog! Hi!)

weird that they have the bio label..the website looks relatively credible..cld have checked its stall at the salon de l'agri if i knew about this..hehe..like syliva said, maybe it's a hybrid since breast milk doesn't have enough protein to form cheese..

eeks, i think it's a hoax or perhaps the breastmilk content is very minimal. just one of the ingredients.

i'm all for breastfeeding too, i stopped about the same time as you with my son, at 21months.

Aerin

Hi & thank you for dropping by. Don't remember watching that episode of Friends but it's the first time I've heard someone refer to it as tasting like cantaloupe juice.

Moo

Can you imagine what their display at the salon de l'agri would be like ?

Maryann

I don't think many people would be willing to try it.

So you've found her blog :-). I was in reasonably active contact with her more than a year ago over a (rather negative) entry that she made about Singapore in 43 Places. And had the chance to discover her interesting blog, travels, life etc. :-)
I wonder how anybody can find enough breastmilk to make cheese, most people usually think that they do not even have enough to feed their own babies. LOL

What's 43 places ? Is it a collection of travel stories ? I'll go look into it when I have more time.

Even tho I do have friends who generate abundance of milk, you're right, most of us barely manage enough for our own baby.

It's like a Forum where you share your experiences or comments etc but under the specific place or country itself. I've gone off it for a while now, only going back from time to time to check out what people say about Singapore. Things can get really mean and negative about the country at times, I feel it my mission to set things straight whenever I can.

I breastfed my 3 kids for quite a long time (max 3 years or so) and at times I was sure I had not much milk. But I'm very NIKE (just do it), and the babies all seemed to enjoy the sucking and none of them are very thin leh. But most importantly (touch wood) they rarely fall sick.
